What this IELTS essay checker looks for
- Length. Under 250 words (Task 2) or 150 (Task 1) costs marks for Task Response.
- Paragraphs. No paragraphing limits Coherence and Cohesion to band 5. Aim for 4–5 paragraphs in Task 2.
- Linking words. You need a range of cohesive devices, without repeating the same one mechanically.
- Repetition. Repeating key nouns instead of paraphrasing holds back Lexical Resource.
- Formal register. Contractions and informal phrases don't suit an academic essay.
- Structure. Task 1 needs an overview of the main trends. Task 2 needs a clear conclusion.
How IELTS Writing is scored
Examiners give a band from 0 to 9 for each of four equally weighted criteria: Task Response (Task Achievement in Task 1), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1. The checks above cover the mechanical side of these criteria; the AI evaluation in Worddemy scores all four the way an examiner would.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what students ask most about this topic.
01Is this IELTS writing checker free?
Yes. The instant checks are free, need no sign-up and run entirely in your browser, so your essay is never uploaded. If you want a band score, Worddemy's AI evaluation scores your first Task 2 essay free on the free plan.
02Does the checker give me a band score?
No. It checks the mechanical things examiners penalise: length, paragraphing, linking words, repetition, informal language, and whether you have an overview (Task 1) or a conclusion (Task 2). A band score needs a judgement of your ideas and grammar accuracy, which is what the AI evaluation in Worddemy does against the four official criteria.
03What does the AI writing evaluation check?
It scores your essay on Task Response (or Task Achievement), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, gives an overall band, and shows sentence-level corrections so you can see exactly what to change.
04How many words should an IELTS essay be?
At least 250 words for Task 2 and 150 for Task 1. Most high-scoring Task 2 essays are 260–320 words, and Task 1 answers 160–200. There is no upper limit, but writing far more leaves less time to check your work.
05Why does the checker flag contractions and words like "a lot of"?
IELTS Writing expects a formal academic register. Contractions (don't, it's) and informal phrases (a lot of, kids, stuff) don't cost a whole band on their own, but they signal a less academic style and limit your Lexical Resource score.
06Can I check a General Training letter?
Yes. Choose "Task 1 report / letter" for the 150-word minimum. The overview check is designed for Academic reports, so you can ignore it for letters.
